Amateur Baseball in New Jersey

Where can an adult find a place to play baseball in New Jersey where Little League benchwarmers, scrubs cut from their high school squads, All-State High Schoolers, Division I standouts, and former minor/major leaguers all come together to play in one league? Well, its the Amateur Baseball Association!

The Amateur Baseball Association (ABA) was founded by 2 disgruntled players, Larry Frank and Jason Pritchard. They were playing in another league and got fed up with how poorly it was run. So they decided to start their own league. Their league would pride itself on customer service, where the players and managers had a voice on the rules, All-Star selections, and other issues affecting the league. The league would also provide a fun atmosphere for players on a Sunday to extend or relive their childhood, playing their favorite sport as a kid.

What makes the ABA great, is there is a skill level available no matter what your age or playing ability, with a choice of wood or metal bat divisions. The ABA is also very progressive, with several women even participating in the games and this spring it will have its first ever female umpire.

The ABA has given back to the community, with charity games that have benefited St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Autism Awareness, and Breast Cancer Research.

The ABA started from humble beginnings, with only 26 teams total in its first spring season in 2003. Last spring, there were over 100 teams in the spring alone and over 200 total for the entire 2010 season, making it the largest amateur baseball league in the history of New Jersey! And will be even larger in the 2011 Spring Season!

The league recently received exciting news when they were contacted by representatives from Oprah’s new network, to do a baseball related story featuring the ABA.

Spring, warm sunshine, and the smell of fresh cut grass will be upon us soon. Why not spend your Sundays playing the game you love? Play Hardball! Play in the Amateur Baseball Association!
